Are You Considering Commercial Flight Training?

Blog

If you want to become a commercial pilot, then there is a well-established path that you can follow to achieve your goal. You may want commercial flight training, but you will need to start at the beginning by learning to fly small planes. If you are starting from the very beginning then it can be helpful to start with a Trial Instructional Flight (TIF). This one-off class will take place at a licensed training centre and will give you a useful grounding in the basics so that you can make the best use of future training sessions. Once you have some basic knowledge, you can think about training for a private pilots license.

Earning your pilots license

Gaining a private pilots license can take around six months and involves both theoretical studies and flying lessons. You will work with an instructor who will assess your ability to control an aircraft. Finally, you will need to demonstrate what you have learned to a licensed testing officer. You will be tested for a full round-trip which will include multiple landings. You must also satisfy the inspector of your competence in areas such as airmanship and flight planning. He will want to know that you can respond to radio signals and comply with any special instructions you may be given. After completing the required training to earn your private pilots license, you are ready to begin commercial flight training.

Starting commercial flight training

There are several approaches that you could take to commercial flight training. You could opt for the standard 200-hour course which includes both flight training and theory learning. An alternative approach is to opt for an integrated CPL training program which involves about 150 hours of study. By the time you have completed your studies, you will have again at least 150 hours of flying experience, cross-country time and time as 'pilot in command'. To apply for a CPL flight test you must be over the age of eighteen and have already passed the theory test. Once you have completed the CPL test, you can fly as a co-pilot in a commercial aircraft or as the pilot in command of a single pilot aircraft.

Obtaining an ATPL

The final step in the world of commercial flight training is applying for an air transport pilot license. You must be over twenty-one to apply for this license, and you must also have completed a course of advanced studies in air law, navigation, meteorology, loading and many other areas. In addition to the theory studies, you must also have completed 1500 total flying hours.
