A Few Reminders When Choosing a Bus Hire for School or Youth Trips

Blog

Getting a bus for school field trips or trips arranged by a church youth group can be a bit different than renting a limousine to drive you back and forth to the airport. Arranging transport for large groups, no matter the purpose, can mean special needs that you may be overlooking, and especially if you're making arrangements for teens or children. Note a few reminders when choosing a bus hire for school or youth trips of any sort and then be sure to discuss these with a bus rental or charter company so you know nothing is overlooked.

Check with local legal regulations

In some cases, you may be legally obligated to use a certain type of bus when transporting children, and this can change depending on the number of children, their age, and so on. You want to choose transport that will be the right size for your group, but you should always start with legal regulations; if you're obligated to use a school bus for teenagers, you want to ensure you choose this type of bus rather than thinking a minivan or other such transport will suffice.

Check onboard and below deck storage

This can be especially important for bands, sports teams, and the like. Not only do you need to ensure that there is enough storage but you also need to ensure the storage will accommodate oversized items like tubas, javelins, theater props, and other such pieces that may not store so easily. In some cases, you may need to store these items on seats on the bus and this can reduce the number of seats you have for passengers, so be sure you ask about this and check all details related to needed storage before you charter a bus.

Ensure the bus you need can be used for your destination

Remember that some large school buses may not be allowed to stay in the parking lot of museums and other such locations where space is limited. They also may not be able to drive easily through certain tunnels or under bridges that are not large enough to accommodate; this can be important if you're planning a trip through a historic district where roads may be very small and cramped. Discuss your destination and preferred route with a bus charter company and note if you might need something smaller, even two buses rather than one, so the vehicles can easily fit the roadways and the entryway of any such building.
